Why Did "Straight-Talk" McCain Lie About Jack Abramoff? (HUFFINGTON POST)
September 16, 2008  |  11:45 AM (EST)  |  Link to Article

Sen. John McCain, for many, is an appealing presidential candidate, because he seems to have followed his conscience, not Republican Party dogma, on so many issues. These include his support of campaign finance reform, and his opposition to the Bush tax cuts, drilling in the Arctic Wilderness, and a constitutional amendment banning abortion. He touts himself as a "straight talker" whose word can be trusted.

Before launching his probe into Jack Abramoff -- one of the most prominent and powerful Republican lobbyists in Washington -- McCain claimed that he had never heard of or met Abramoff. This claim certainly stretches credulity.

Just in Time for Yom Kippur, and Sentencing, Abramoff Paints Himself as Repentant (THE JEWISH DAILY: FORWARD)
By Nathan Guttman
Thu. Sep 11, 2008

Washington - As he serves time in federal prison, a picture is emerging in court documents and in a newly published book of a repentant Jack Abramoff, who is embracing the Jewish notion of "Teshuva" and turning his back on the days of power, money and politics.

At least that is what the once-powerful Republican lobbyist, convicted in a massive corruption investigation in the nation’s capital, would have us believe.

Book attacks McCain's Abramoff inquiry (POLITICO.COM)
Written by Mike Harwood
9/8/08 4:56 AM EST

A new book released the day after Sen. John McCain accepted the Republican presidential nomination attacks one of his trademark political successes: his investigation of now-jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff in 2004 and 2005.

"The Perfect Villain: John McCain and the Demonization of Lobbyist Jack Abramoff," by former Boston Globe freelancer Gary S. Chafetz and put out by small independent publisher Martin and Lawrence press, aggressively puts forth the case that McCain’s investigation into Abramoff wasn’t the high-minded reform crusade he has made it out to be on the campaign trail, but rather was pure political payback.

Jack Abramoff, the powerhouse Washington lobbyist who admitted running a wide-ranging corruption scheme that ensnared lawmakers, Capitol Hill aides and government officials, yesterday received a reduced sentence of four years in prison because of his cooperation with federal investigators.

McCain must release his POW records-without delay

The Russians ran the Hanoi Hilton, where McCain was held during the Vietnam War. Vladimir Putin has the very records McCain refuses to release here. Putin could use these records to blackmail McCain should he become President. McCain must release his POW records-without delay, rationalizations or redaction-for the sake of our national security.

The American people need to know what is in those files.

There are claims that during his captivity as a POW, John McCain granted between 20 and 32 interviews, many of which were prejudicial to the United States and provided the North Vietnamese with valuable military information.
